Here’s today’s Bottom Line
Deep tropical moisture is in place over the entire area… without the presence of a tropical system.
1. Moisture.
2. Source of lift.
3. Instability.
Those are the three ingredients to shower and thunderstorm development.
Moisture: As stated above, significant moisture is in place. Precipitable water values (a true measure of moisture in the atmosphere) are running nearly 200% of normal for early August. Extremely high values.
Source of lift and atmospheric instability: A broad area of low pressure is locked in place over the southeast. It’s actually a rather unseasonable scenario. Multiple disturbances will rotate around the base of this trough, then pushing north along the coast. This is the spark to drive showers and thunderstorms.
Model blends point to the highest rain totals this week coming along the coast… but 1-2 more inches of rain are possible across inland areas, including Columbus County.
The model blend is one thing… but what it doesn’t show us is the potential for training showers and storms…. showers and storms that form and move over the same general area for hours at a time. This can result in 3- to 6-inch rain totals over a relatively small geographic area, while adjacent areas receive much less. It is essentially impossible to predict ahead of time exactly where these training storms will become established.
This stagnant weather patterns is likely to persist through Wednesday… POSSIBLY even Thursday and Friday. It’s hard to predict how this trough will linger with nothing to kind of “shove” it away. But … we need every drop of the rain that we’re going to get this week.
