Some Lake Waccamaw residents may see smoke rising from the ground Thursday, but the town says it is no cause for alarm.
Pressurized smoke is used to help find leaks in drainage systems. Inflow and infiltration (I and I) can dramatically shorten the lifetime of wastewater facilities when stormwater drains into sewer pipes and is processed. Stormwater reduces the capacity and causes wear and tear on systems, in addition to potentially causing leaks and overflows.
The town will be pumping smoke into pipes in several neighborhoods to check for leaks. A social media post by Lake Waccamaw said residents along Church Street, Cameron, Central Avenue, Ash, Dogwood, Lakeview Avenue, Nancy Street, Dallas and Live Oak, along with to 100 to 400 blocks of Lakeshore Drive, may see smoke rising from the ground or sewer access points.
