BOILING SPRINGS—Kaelum Grainger threw for 108 yards and two touchdown passes as South Brunswick defeated South Columbus 20-18 on Friday night.

The win puts the Cougars in a second-place tie with the Stallions in the Southeastern Conference.

South Brunswick struck first with a 45-yard Grainger to Edward Young touchdown pass with 10:31 in the first quarter. Camden Van Horn added the extra point to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead. South Columbus retaliated with a seven yard touchdown rush from Cam Bellamy. The PAT attempt was no good, leaving the Cougars ahead 7-6.

In the second quarter, Amerius Revels ran into the endzone from four yards out to push the Cougar lead to 14-6 with 10:18 in the second quarter. Van Horn added the extra point. With 4:59 remaining in the half, Jaxon Greene found Jamarion Stackhouse for a 23-yard touchdown pass to cut the South Brunswick advantage to 14-12. The Stallions could not convert the two-point attempt. The Stallions’ Ju Ju Simmons recovered the kickoff in the endzone on a weird play to take the lead 18-14. The two-point conversion was not successful.

Both defenses tightened up in the second half with the only score being a 40-yard connection by Grainger to Young at the 5:52 mark in the third quarter to put South Brunswick back on top 20-18. The extra point attempt was blocked. The touchdown pass was enough for the Cougars’ victory.

Amerius Revels ended up with 96 yards rushing and a touchdown for South Brunswick in the victory. Nate Earley added 10 solo tackles and 14 total on the night for the Cougars.

South Brunswick goes to 2-1 in the conference and 4-4 on the year. The Cougars travel to Fairmont (1-2, 3-5) on Friday. South Columbus (2-1, 5-3) will be at Whiteville (2-0, 7-0) on Oct. 30.
