  A gathering at a downtown Whiteville business turned into a panic early Sunday morning. Police are still trying to determine exactly what happened at Functionz Venue and Lounge at 910 South Madison Street. The business bills itself as a “performance and event venue” on its Facebook page, offering a location for family reunions, weddings and receptions, birthday parties and similar events. Post time 2:48 p.m. Washington Street at Powell Boulevard has reopened in Whiteville after a crash and shooting this morning (April 13). Whiteville Police Chief Paul Rockenbach said that one male was shot and transported to an area hospital. He did not immediately have the individual’s condition or name. Streets were taped off from the Cookout restaurant on the south to Frink on the north.

Police are investigating a shootout in the 900 block of South Madison Street that shut down a party Saturday night. We have reached out to Whiteville Police for more information.
