August 13, 1943 ~ June 3, 2021 (age 77)
Gerald Winfred Sutton, age 77, of Whiteville, passed away at the Angel House Hospice LifeCare Center early on Thursday, June 3, 2021, after a 9+ year battle with dementia/Alzheimer’s. Jake was born on August 13, 1945, in Wilmington, to the late Glenn Alexander & Juanita Johnson Sutton.
Jake was a graduate of New Hanover High School and began a career in the grocery business with Winn-Dixie in Wilmington. He and his high school sweetheart moved their family to Whiteville in 1977 where Jake worked for over 14 years for Hill’s Food Stores. His career path transitioned to United Carolina Bank and continued with them as they became BB&T. He retired from Dealer Operations and Collections at BB&T of Lumberton in 2009.
Jake, Dad, Daddy and Granddaddy…devoted his life to his family, his church, feeding the birds and squirrels in his yard and “piddling” in his garage. He was a long time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed fishing, NASCAR races and building small wood projects.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years Jerrie Lynn Parker Sutton of the home; a son, Harvey Gerald Sutton and wife Angie of North Myrtle Beach; two daughters, Pamela Lynn Sutton of Whiteville, and Lindy Sutton Littles (Jason) of Evergreen; a brother, Roy Glenn Sutton of Wilmington; a sister-in-law, Ann Parker Kirby; two grandchildren, Christopher Cameron Bland and Rayegan Elizabeth Littles; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents as well as two brothers, Robert Allen Sutton and Carl Alexander Sutton.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at 10:00am at the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery with the Revered Jimmy Caines officiating. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations please be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association.
