One suspect has been arrested in the Friday night shootout that killed one teen and injured two others.

District Attorney Jon David said in a press release that a juvenile was taken into custody by the sheriff’s office. David did not give details about the arrest, including when the suspect was arrested.

David said his office plans to charge the suspect as an adult.

“The juvenile is scheduled to appear in court later today in Columbus County,” David said in the press release. “The District Attorney’s office will begin the necessary procedures to bring this matter to Superior Court.”

Markel Evans, 18, was shot to death at the Five Points community building between Cerro Gordo and Chadbourn Friday night. Evans was attending a large birthday party at the building, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff Jody Greene said someone pulled into the parking lot of the center and opened fire. Evidence at the scene indicated someone shot back at the gunmen, Greene said.

Two juveniles, ages 16 and 14, were injured in the gunfire.

Another shooting occurred on South Wilkes Street around the same time, the sheriff’s office said. A female victim in that case is expected to recover. It is not known if the two cases are related.

Anyone with information about the Five Points shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s office, or submit a tip anonymously using the CCSO app. If you have any information about the Chadbourn shooting, contact the Chadbourn Police Department.
