James G. “Jimmie” Smith, 71, Army Veteran of Elizabethtown passed peacefully at home surrounded by family on Thursday, January 6, 2022. He is preceded in death by his parents, George Washington Smith and Esther Melvin Smith. Jimmie leaves behind three sons, Garrett Smith (Kimberly) of Cypress Creek, Jamie Smith (Ericka) of Clarkton, and Blake Hood (Angel) of Raleigh and their mother, Sylvia C. Smith of White Lake, two brothers Neil Smith of Fair Bluff and Clifford Smith (Nancy) of Ammon, three sisters, Loretta Harris (Lonnie), Marguerite Coble (Johnny), and Paralee McCall (Wayne), all of Ammon, nine grandchildren, Kirkland, Zoey, Khloey, Ensley, Nicholas (Emilee), Morgan, Brooke, Alexis, and Camden, one great grandson, Clayton, and a special friend, Polly Garner.

Jimmie was raised in the sandhills of Ammon, NC and loved it. He was a kind, loving man who was devoted to his family and his community. He was a successful barber, farmer, real estate agent, and auctioneer. Most recently serving as the owner/operator of On the Square Auction & Realty. Jimmie served as Bladen County Commissioner for 24 years. He spent his life as a giver and never asking for anything in return. Jimmie loved to hunt, and never missed being in the woods on the last day of hunting season, even in sickness. His sons made sure he had one last hunting day before he left this world. Jimmie will be missed. His devotion to his family, friends and his beloved county will not soon be forgotten.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 9, 2022  at 2 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown with Rev. Neil Smith and Rev. Lindsay Collins officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Windsor United Methodist Church Cemetery in Ammon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Bladen County Shriners.
