New additions run wild this week in the Good News. It even includes a baby of the four legged kind.

The newest equine addition at the Boys and Girls Home.

The Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina welcomed a new addition to the equine family last week. No name has been decided for the AQHA filly yet, but a few are in the works to see what fits.  


Isabella Boyd was honored this week by the state fire marshal’s office for saving her family from a house fire. The nine year old was on her second day back at Tabor City Middle when she was recognized during an assembly.

State Fire Marshal Mike Causey presented the award for heroism. Miss Isabella discovered her home was on fire in December, and managed to get her sister to safety while awakening the rest of the household. Firefighter David Vela is recovering from injuries sustained in the fire.

A march honoring slain civil rights leader Martin Luther  King will be held in Whiteville Jan. 15. Dalton Dockery is organizing the event. The march will go from Vineland Station to the courthouse and back on Madison Street. Everyone is welcome. The march will be from 11 a.m. until noon.

Skate nights at the Lake Waccamaw Anchorage Camp are back every Saturday night through March from 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Admission is $7, and skate rentals are $1 each. The camp is located at 412 Lakeshore Drive in Lake Waccamaw.  

The Columbus County Health Department is accepting appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations. The Johnson and Johnson and Moderna vaccines are available. Call 910.640.6615 extension 7070.

The town of Chadbourn is encouraging water customers facing cutoff for non- payment to sign up for the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program.

The state program is managed through the Department of Social Services. Applications can be picked up at the Chadbourn Town Hall or the DSS office in Whiteville. Call 910.642.2800 or 1.866.719.0141 for more information.

It was road trip time for 13 lucky dogs at the shelter this week.

The Whiteville Museum of Natural Sciences will be having their Saturday Storytime Saturday (Jan. 8) at 10 a.m. Storytime is held every second Saturday of each month. The museum is located at 415 South Madison Street in Whiteville.  

The Golden Leaf Scholarship program is now accepting applications for students who are planning to attend a 2- or 4-year North Carolina College. The deadline is Mar. 1. To apply online, visit www.cfnc.org/goldenleaf.  

Some furbabies at the Columbus County Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services are off to a good start for the new year. 13 dogs are on their way to rescues in New York, thanks to Rusty’s Legacy Animal Rescue. The non-profit established in Mcdowell County partners with other organizations to find no kill solutions.  

Pierce and Company in Hallsboro did an upgrade to their meat market’s infrastructure over the last couple of weeks. The upgrades include new flooring and paint. The market is now back up and running for customers.

Whiteville Police Department is seeking to fill a full-time police officer’s position. All applicants must have obtained and completed the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Justice Training and Standards Commission.
