Columbus County residents may qualify for a one-time LIEAP payment
Residents who received LIEAP (Low Income Energy Assistance Program) during the month of December may qualify to receive an automated payment right away.
Individuals who are 60 years or older, or disabled, receive any type of assistance from the DAAS (Division of Aging and Adult Service) or DSS (Department of Social Services), and who participated in LIEAP last year may be eligible for the payment. These households do not need to apply or enroll for the benefit, but they do need to contact DSS if there have been any changes in finances since the last season of LIEAP.
Recipients will be notified by mail of eligibility. Those not receiving LIEAP, but are getting services from DAAS or DSS are encouraged to apply. The application can be found online at the DHHS website or in the lobby of the DSS office in Whiteville. The paperwork can be mailed, faxed, or dropped off and must include a valid telephone number so a phone interview can be conducted.
