Local Sports: The Varsity basketball regular season is over and all that remains is the Conference Tournament at Pender High School. Sitting on top of both the boys and girls is the Whiteville Wolfpack. The boys finished with a 17-4 record and a conference record of 9-1, while the girls went undefeated in conference play (10-0) and a regular season record of 15-7. Both Whiteville teams are the number one seed in the tournament and have a bye in the first round. Both teams will play Thursday, at Pender, in the semi-finals.
NFL: The Los Angeles rams came back to beat the Bengals in Super Bowl 56. There was just under a minute and a half left in the game and Mathew Stafford hit Cooper Kupp in the right side of the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Rams the 23-20 win after the extra point conversion. Joe Burrow did get the ball back and almost got the Bengals into field goal range but fell short. Burrow was sacked seven times (tied for most in Super Bowl). Cooper Kupp won the game’s MVP award and set records this post season with 33 receptions and a four-game touchdown streak. It was the Rams second Super Bowl title, the first one in Los Angeles (1999 and this season). Rams Aaron Donald is considering retirement, ending his career on top of the NFL mountain.
