2/20/22 Daily Sports Wrap Up 

Local Sports:  The Whiteville Wolfpack Varsity Baseball Team has a scrimmage game this Friday at 4pm at home. Every pitch will be covered live on your hometown station WTXY Kool 103.9FM and streaming at www.kool1039radio.com


NBA: The 71st NBA All Star Break is today at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Regular games resume Thursday, Feb 24. 

In the skills competition Cole Gregory was robbed as he threw down a vicious windmill, while wearing Timberland Boots laces to the top in the first round. Besides that, Obi Toppin of the Knicks won the Slam Dunk competition. His closing dunk was not even a dunk, more like a layup, but congratulations to the New York Knick. At least Knick fans have something to cheer about this season. In the 3-Point shooting contest, Karl Anthony-Towns took that trophy with 29 shots made in the final round. It is the most made by a center in the competition. In the Skills competition, it was the Cavaliers squad that won the latest version of the contest. 


NHL Yesterday:  Avalanche beat Sabres 5-3 

Oilers take down the Jets 4-2 

Senators host the Bruins 3-2 in overtime 

Blues burn the Maple Leafs 6-3 

Kings control the Coyotes 5-3 

Ducks shuck the Canucks 7-4  

Kraken get burnt by the Flames 2-1 

Today:  The Hurricanes are on the road to face the Bruins. The puck drops at 1pm. The Hurricanes are 33-11-4 and sit in first place in the Metropolitan division. The game is on the NHL Network. 

Islanders host the Canadiens at 2pm 

Panthers and Blackhawks 3pm 

Rangers travel to Ottawa to face the Senators at 5pm 

Sabres at Blue Jackets 6pm 

Stars versus Coyotes 7pm 

Sharks host the Golden Knights at 8pm 

Wild and Oilers 8pm 


NCAA Men’s Basketball Yesterday:  Notre Dame falls to Wake Forest 79-74. Alondes Williams finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds and Jake LaRavia ended with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for the Deamon Deacons. 

Mercer lost at Western Carolina 69-65. Marlow Gilmore led the way for the Catamonts with 19 points and 7 rebounds. 

High Point drops a close one to Radford 66-64 

UNC Greensboro gets beaten by Samford 55-49 

North Carolina Central defeated Delaware State 84-79 in overtime. The Eagles were led by Justin Wright who finished with 32 points and 9 rebounds. 

Coastal Carolina beat Troy 73-63. The Chanticleers were led by Rudi Williams with 16 points. 

Drexel defeats Elon 71-60 

North Carolina handles Virginia Tech 65-57. Caleb Love was the high scorer for the Tar Heels with 23 points, he also had 7 assists. Armando Bacot had a double-double with 12m points and 15 rebounds. 

Winthrop wins at UNC Asheville 84-79 

North Carolina A & T bet nipped by Campbell 64-63 

Florida State falls to Duke 88-70. Pablo Banchero led the Blue Devils in scoring with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Trevor Keels finished with 13 points and 8 assists for Duke. 

North Carolina-Wilmington defeated James Madison 78-77 in overtime. Jaylen Sims had a 24 point and 10 rebound double-double for the Seahawks. 

Today:  East Carolina Pirates are on the road against UCF at 2pm. 


NASCAR:  The NASCAR Cup Series kicks off this afternoon with the 64th running of The Daytona 500- The Great American Race; coverage starts at 2:30 on FOX. 

Menards Arco Series Luca Oil 200 driven by General Tire seemed like a repeat of last year’s race. Corey Heim and Venturini Motorsports get the win. Teammate Parker Chase finished second and helped push Heim to victory. 

In the 41 Xfinity Series Beef, It’s what For Dinner 300 winner is rookie driver Austin Hill of the Richard Childress racing team. He took home the win under a caution flag after a spectacular 9-car wreck on the last lap. 

Camping World Truck Series winner on Thursday was Zane Smith. The Camping World Truck Series is back March 4, at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway with the Victoria’s Face Foundation 200 at 9pm on FS1. 

NASCAR Cup Series races next Feb 27. It is the Wise Power 400 at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. 


Olympics:  Elana Meyers-Taylor and Sylvia Hoffman take home the Bronze Medal in the Two-Woman Bobsled. 

With these two medals the United States ends the Beijing Games with 23 total Medals. Second in the total medal count behind Norway (34). The United States finished third in Gold Medals (8) behind Norway (15) and Germany (10). China finished in fourth place in the medal count with 14 medals and tied the USA with 8 gold medals. 

The closing ceremonies were also last evening in China (Feb 20).
