Search Called Off; Resumes Monday

Crews from Columbus and Bladen Counties are on the scene of a possible drowning at Lake Waccamaw.

Teams search for a missing teen have gone home for the night after spending Mother’s Day scouring Lake Waccamaw.

The 18-year-old male and two companions hit rough water while kayaking today. The companions were picked up by Lake Waccamaw Rescue and treated for hypothermia.

A helicopter from the N.C. Highway Patrol deployed as part of the search late Sunday afternoon.

State Parks spokesperson Katie Hall said crews postponed what is considered a recovery mission after sunset. They will return at 7 a.m.

Mayor Matt Wilson asked boaters to stay off the lake during the search.

Assisting agencies include the Wildlife Resources Commission, Lake Waccamaw Fire and Rescue, Lake Waccamaw Station 30, Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, White Lake Water Rescue, Acme Delco Rescue, N.C. Highway Patrol, Columbus County Emergency Management, and N.C. State Parks.
