The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for today (Monday) due to sweltering conditions across the area.

Whiteville could see a heat index of 105 or more today, followed by even higher numbers tomorrow and Wednesday. A few thunderstorms could bring temporary relief, but due to the heat those storms could be strong to severe, with large amounts of lightning.

The sheriff’s office issued an advisory earlier today encouraging people to stay indoors in air conditioning during the worst of the day. Make sure all pets and livestock have fresh clean water. Take frequent breaks if you must work outside, and drink plenty of water. Check on the elderly and shut-in residents to ensure they are safe as well.
