Born August 26, 1955, in Whiteville, North Carolina at Columbus County Hospital, Andy was the sixth of seven children and the fifth-born son to Bill and Fredrica Turner. Andy passed away on July 11, 2022, after a brief illness. He was 66.
In spite of several of life’s curve balls thrown at his development along the way, Andy was an optimistic, affable fellow with an easy laugh. He was a book-lover and a history buff, loved the Atlanta Braves, and UNC basketball. In his early years, Andy was a Boy Scout, a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Whiteville, and later a trainer for the Whiteville High School football team. He attended Southeastern Community College after high school and remained a sports enthusiast throughout his life. In recent years, Andy resided at West Bladen Assisted Living Center in Bladenboro, North Carolina where he had great appreciation and fondness for the staff.
He was preceded in death by his father, William (Bill) Turner, his mother, Fredrica (Freddie) Wadsworth Turner Stell, and his brother, Robert (Bobby) Turner.
He is survived by his brothers, Bill (and Elizabeth) Turner of Whiteville, NC, Richard (and Susanna) Turner of Pinehurst, NC, Craig (and Chris) Turner of Wilmington, NC, and sisters, Jean Turner of Bishop, CA, and Michele Turner (and Dan) Murphy of Stockbridge, GA, along with nephews Will and Josh Turner, Curt and Brian Turner, Brannon Dempsey, Forrest and Clay Turner, Michael Turner, nieces Jocelyn Turner Whitlock, Emily and Annie Turner, as well as nine great-nephews and three great-nieces.
There will be a private family-only service for Andy at a later date. Donations in Andy’s memory may be sent to the Columbus County Arts Council or to Hospice of Columbus County.
