Columbus County has enough going on this week to fill your plate to overflowing. If you want to share the wealth, be sure to check out three food drives happening throughout the area.
• The Farmers Union community will be hosting their monthly food bank on Saturday, July 9, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. The event will be held at Sandy Plain Missionary Baptist Church in the fellowship hall. The food bank is usually open every second Saturday of each month.

• Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park at Daddy Joe’s Campground will be taking up non-perishable food items to donate to Families First on Saturday evening, July 9, from 7-9 p.m. If you would like to donate directly to the charity, the Families First office is located at 121 West Main St., Whiteville. The campground’s address is 626 Richard Wright Rd., Tabor City.
•. The Whiteville Police Department and the Harvest Table Inc will be sponsoring a food drive on Friday, July 15, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the City Hall parking lot in Whiteville.
• The Chadbourn Police Department will be having a community safety day on Saturday, July 9, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The event will include information on bicycle safety, prescription pill disposal, golf cart registration, and an equipment display. CPD is located at 602 North Brown Street. Folks are invited to come out and meet the officers during the community safety day.
• The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Whiteville will be having Second Saturday Storytime on July 9 starting at 10:30 a.m. Children will be learning all about sea turtles and will have the chance to join in on a fun dinosaur activity. This program is geared toward children ages 3-6 years old, but book lovers of all ages are invited to attend. The museum is located at 415 South Madison St., Whiteville.
• Columbus County Sheriff’s Office escorted two Dixie Softball Teams, the Central Columbus SweeTees and the Darlings, through Whiteville Friday morning. The teams are on their way to the Dixie Softball State Tournaments being held this weekend in Carthage and Troy. The boys’ Whiteville AA Coach Pitch team is headed to the State Tournaments also.
• Services for the Lakeside Ministry at the Lake Waccamaw Campground Pavilion are still ongoing and will continue to run every Sunday through Sept. 4 at 9 a.m. The speaker this weekend will be Rev. Bradley Taylor, and the singer will be Ashley Strickland. The campground is located at 250 Waccamaw Shores Road in Lake Waccamaw.
• Whiteville Parks and Recreation is now holding registration for fall youth football until Aug. 12. The program is for child ages 7-12 years old, and fees are $38.50 for city residents and $48.50 for non-city residents. • Shizzy’s Wildcat Rescue in Fair Bluff is in need of volunteers to help with the construction of den boxes and installation of perimeter fencing, top railing and kickers on several big cat and wolf habitats on Saturday, July 9, from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
All interested volunteers must be at least 18 years old, be able to lift a minimum of 20 pounds, and be comfortable working in various weather conditions. No experience is necessary. • The Lake Waccamaw Fire and Rescue Department had the drawing for their Henry Golden Boy “Fireman Tribute Edition” 22 rifle donated by Mayor Matt Wilson on Monday, July 4. Tickets were sold throughout the previous week and during the department’s annual hotdog sale the following Saturday.
The winner was picked and announced during a Facebook live by Chief Brandy Nance and two fellow station members. Will Edwards is now the proud owner of the firearm.
All proceeds from the hotdog sale and the raffle will go towards the purchase of water rescue equipment that will include a personal watercraft. The total amount of money raised will be announced soon.
• Join the Museum of Natural Sciences in Whiteville for a family movie night plus science activities. Bring your chairs or blankets and get ready to have some fun. “Finding Nemo” will be the feature on July 15.
The museum’s lawn will be open at 8 p.m. for nature activities, and the feature presentation will begin at 8:30 p.m. Movies on Madison are free, and no registration is required. Refreshments will be available for sale onsite.
• The H.E.A.R.T.S Foundation of Chadbourn will be having their annual back-to-school supply drive on July 30 at 3 p.m. The organization will be collecting items until July 20 for the cause. Supplies needed include pencils, composition books, markers, erasers, index cards, folders, binders, crayons, highlighters, and backpacks.
