Join the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences (NCMNS) in Whiteville for Second Saturday Storytime on Saturday, July 8, at 10:30 a.m. Staff will be reading and speaking about oceans and sea turtles. A nature-related activity will follow. This program is for kids ages 2–5 years old, but all are welcome. Second Saturday Storytime is sponsored by the Columbus Council of North Carolina Reading Association in partnership with the NCMNS. The event is held every second Saturday of each month at the museum.    

The Southeastern North Carolina Genealogical Society will meet at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, located at 511 North Thompson Street, Whiteville, on Saturday at 2 p.m. The speaker will be Dalton Dockery, Southeast District Director for Cooperative Extension. Dockery will discuss the history of agriculture in Columbus County. Some members and visitors arrive early to share family histories. The public is welcome. 

The Columbus County Partnership for Children (Smart Start) had a helping hand from Wallyce Todd of Community CPR and the teens of YouthWorks to update their facility. The Early Learning and Family Resource Center was reorganized, rearranged, and revamped in just two days thanks to those hardworking adults and kids.   

Brown Street Station in Chadbourn will also be open every second Saturday of the month for the Main Street Market. Live entertainment and vendors will be there from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. for the public to enjoy. The next selling day will be tomorrow, July 8. The venue is located at 202 North Brown Street. Six Old Dock firefighters have just become state certified Emergency Medical Responders. They are Ted Dorsch, Westly Dorsch, Alex Long, Ralph Reynolds, Leman Ward, and Steve Ward.

 Milk Before Meat Ministries will host a car wash Saturday at Abundant Life Assembly of God at 5384 James B. White Highway South. Cost is $20.00 per car and $30.00 per truck. All proceeds go to their outreach ministry. The car wash is from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. 

 The Lakeside Ministry will run every Sunday through Labor Day at 9 a.m. at the Lake Waccamaw campground pavilion. This Sunday, July 9, the speaker will be Danny Williams with singing by Lauren Edmund. 

 Peace Fellowship at 5847 Red Hill Road in Whiteville will offer Tuesday Bible study at 11 a.m. or 6 p.m. through Aug. 22. The event will be led by Pastor Jerry Dalton and Connie Todd. Shizzy’s Wildcat Rescue in Fair Bluff will be holding two volunteer workdays this month on July 15 and 29 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. You must be 18 years old or older to use tools and climb ladders.  Many Columbus County churches will be having Vacation Bible School during the months of July and August. Some of them begin this weekend.  Some Columbus County School locations will be serving free food for children ages 1-18 years old this summer. Acme Delco Elementary, Hallsboro/Artesia Elementary, Old Dock Elementary, West Columbus School, and South Columbus High will participate through June 30. Chadbourn Elementary will serve food until July 31. 

Get squishy on Thursday, July 13, at 10:30 a.m. with slime in the Playspace Pop-up at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Whiteville. Participants will learn all about slime and make their own. This program is best suited for ages 4–8 years old and is weather-dependent. No registration is required.   

There is a revival coming to Columbus County, and this event is like none other. New Breed Revival is based out of Tampa, Fla., and Whiteville will be the be their next stop in July for ‘Miracles Under the Tent.’ Kevin and Brittney Chamberliss have been in the ministry for 11 years, and over the last five years, they have devoted their full time and attention to spreading the Gospel. They started their profession in Virginia, but they relocated to Tampa in 2017. The couple are both graduates of River University and ordained ministers, and they are a part of a traveling ministry called New Breed Revival.   The next tent event will be from July 12-19 at 2630 Dock Road in Whiteville. Faith clinics will be held daily at 9 a.m. with evening services at 6:30 p.m. each night. For more information about the ministry, visit www.newbreedrevival.com.  The Columbus Career and College Academy at Southeastern Community College will be holding their freshmen picnic on Thursday, July 20, from 5-7 p.m. During the event, faculty and student ambassadors will spend time introducing high school and college staff, introduce the kids to Schoology, hand out chrome books, and offer freshmen the chance to purchase CCCA merchandise and apparel. SCC is located at 4564 Chadbourn Highway in Whiteville.   

 On the Italian Riviera, an unlikely but strong friendship grows between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human at the next Movies on Madison on Friday, July 21, at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville. The feature film will be Luca. The museum lawn will open at 7:30 p.m. for activities, and the movie will begin at dusk. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase. This is a family event, so no coolers, pets, alcoholic beverages, or smoking is allowed on the facility grounds.    

 

The Bladen County Public Library will be partnering with the NCMNS at Whiteville to host a special ecoEXPLORE program. On July 25 from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m., brave and curious minds will get the opportunity to meet a hissing cockroach and learn about things that creep and crawl. Children 12 years old and younger must call to pre-register for this event at 910.862.6990. The library can be found at 111 North Cypress Street in Elizabethtown.  

 Deputy Dwayne Barnes traveled to the N.C. DARE conference to represent the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office. The CCSO’s DARE truck won second place in the car show hosted by program. Barnes was presented with the award on June 22.
