Mr. Kerwin Dewayne Chavis of Lake Waccamaw (formally of Maxton) was born in Scotland County on Wednesday, December 20, 1989, and entered into eternity on Friday, September 15, 2023, completing his journey of 33 years.
He graduated from North Carolina State University May 11, 2013, with a BS in Technology, Design and Engineer Ed. While at State, Kerwin was a member of MGS (Multicultural Greek Association), NASA (Native American Student Association), and AISES (American Indian Science & Engineer Society. In the Spring of 09, he became a brother of the Illustrious Phi Sigma Nu Fraternity, INC.
Kerwin was also a Civil Engineer with the Red Horse Unit, from 2013-2019, and completed a tour of deployment in Kuwait, from August 2016- May 2017 serving as a Staff Sergeant. He was a Journeyman Lineman with Duke Energy with the Cape Fear and Whiteville Ops Center.
Kerwin was a lover of life, he enjoyed spending time with his family. His boys were his heartbeat. Hunting, fishing, farming, and having fun were his pastimes. He served the Lord by serving his fellow man. He attended Union Baptist Church, Lake Waccamaw, NC.
Kerwin was preceded in death by his sister: Jessica Chavis, his maternal grandfather: Thurman Locklear as well as his paternal grandparents: James T. and Marie Chavis. He is survived by his wife: Terri Brooke Chavis, two sons: Dawson Wayne Chavis and Brayden Terry Chavis; his parents: Thurman W. and Cindy C. Chavis; his maternal grandmother Karby Locklear.; his mother-in-law, LaVette Spaulding; his father-in-law, Terry Spaulding; his sister-in-law, Simone Spaulding, and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, brothers and sisters in Christ and friends.
Kerwin will always be known as our “Gentle Giant.”
Visitation will be from Tuesday, September 19, 2023 from 6:00 Until 9:00 PM at Shoe Heel Holiness Methodist Church in Maxton.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday September 20, 2023 at Union Baptist Church in Lake Waccamaw. Burial will follow at 4:00 PM Wednesday, 20, 2023 at Shoe Heel Holiness Methodist Church in Maxton.
