Alex Hawes

October 19, 2023

Alex Devone Hawes, 54 of Nakina, entered the arms of Jesus Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Columbus County, the son of Sara S. Hawes and late Kenneth D. Hawes. He was also preceded in death by his grandson Samuel Grant Williams.

He was a tobacco farmer that enjoyed working with his family. He graduated from Nakina High School in 1987, and graduated Campbell University in 1991 with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and Marketing.

Alex was a dedicated Christian and deacon that loved serving God, his church, and family. He was the co-owner of Hawes Auto Brokers in Whiteville. To know him was to know the great faith he demonstrated as he witnessed to everyone that entered the doors of the car dealership. He always viewed each customer as a chance to witness the love of God. People we know and those we don’t have been encouraged, changed, and inspired by him. God is good, He is just, He is faithful; He is still God and we love Him for who He is and the time He gave Alex to us. He ran the race, kept the pace, and kept his eyes on Jesus.

He is survived by his wife, Becky Powell Hawes, of 31 years; daughters, Leah Grace Hawes and Hannah Hawes Williams and Husband Matt; brother, Gregory D. Hawes and wife Angie; nephews, Dalton Hawes and Chance Hawes; granddaughter, Gracelyn Faith Williams, all of Nakina.

His family will receive friends Sunday, Oct. 22, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Peacock Funeral Home. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2023 at Dulah Missionary Baptist Church, led by Rev. Kenneth Smith. Burial will be in the Hawes family cemetery.

Memorials may be made online to The Gideons International.
