Gates Open at Fair

Gates opened today (Tuesday) for the 43rd annual Columbus County Agricultural Fair.

The fair runs through Sunday, and gates open to the general public daily at 4 p.m.  Special events are scheduled throughout the week, including the livestock show and tug-of-war tonight. The Grades 3-5 spelling bee starts at 6 p.m.
Wednesday will be the talent showcase, with Daniel Gore performing at 5:30 p.m., followed by Hidden Language Dance Co. The Grades 6-8 spelling be starts at 6:30 p/m/, followed by karaoke at 8 p.m.

Thursday brings the Waccamaw Siouan dancers to the stage, with Southside Dance Center and Amy’s Academy of Dance performing at 6 and 7 p.m. The North Tower Band takes to the main stage at 8 p.m. Brunswick Electric Membership will also have a pole top rescue demonstration at 7:30 p.m. at the demolition derby tack.

Friday is a big night, with talent competitions beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Ryan Perry Band at 8 p.m. The demolition derby also kicks off at 7 p.m.

Gates open early on Saturday and Sunday, with events starting at 1 p.m. The Diaper Derby , Pick of the Litter, and schools showcases start at 1:30 p.m., followed by the children’s tractor pull, Randy Hawse and True south band,  and the Crenshaw Trucking Band. Saturday night is the second round of the demolition derby at 7 p.m.

Gates open at 1 p.m. Sunday, and the Fair Jubilee starts at 2 p.m.

 The reproduction tobacco barn is also open for tours, and the tiers were hung with stick of  curing and green tobacco Monday. Dwayne Barnes also donated the use of a 70-year-old cypress board used by his grandfather as a grading table. The barn was designed as a monument to the role agriculture played in the county’s history, as well as a teaching tool to help students understand the process of growing and curing tobacco using stick barns.
