A new urgent care will be built on the site of the currently closed clinic on Powell Boulevard, after construction on the U.S. 701 Super Street is completed in the area.

Whiteville City Council on Tuesday approved a rezoning request by Autry Dawsey Jr. of Premier Enterprises to rezone several lots at Smith Street and Powell Boulevard from residential to B3 commercial. The bypass improvements will bring the roadway literally to the front door of the current urgent care office, which has been closed for some time.

Dawsey said the old clinic will be demolished, and the new construction will be moved east to allow room for the highway and required setbacks.

“My father purchased several lots in there that were residential,” Dawsey said. “There just isn’t enough room with the highway project, so we’re going to build a new building.”

The new clinic will be accessed via Smith Street and Powell, according to the zoning request. The property is located immediately south from the Hardee’s and Wendy’s restaurants, and west of a townhouse development.

The planning board forwarded the request to council with a positive endorsement. Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the move with no discussion.
