April 27, 1959 ~ November 6, 2023 (age 64)
John Clyde Baldwin, age 64, of Whiteville, N.C., died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 6, 2023. He was born on April 27, 1959, in Columbus County to the late James Clayton Baldwin Jr. and Carolyn Wilson Baldwin.
John Clyde, as he was known, was manager for the family business, Baldwin Oil Company, for many years. He attended Hallsboro High School, where he was an outstanding football and baseball player, graduating in 1978. He always loved sports and got excited talking about games with his family and friends. Golf became his sport as he got older, and he was good at it. He often played at Whiteville Country Club or other nearby courses. But he still watched a lot of baseball and football. His favorite team, since childhood, was the St. Louis Cardinals. When it came to college football, he loved the N.C. State Wolfpack and watched all their games. He also enjoyed turkey hunting with family and friends.
He was a lifelong and active member of Peace Fellowship Church in Whiteville, where he served as an usher and Sunday School teacher.
John Clyde was deeply loved by his family and will be greatly missed. Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Carolyn Wilson Baldwin, of Whiteville; his two sisters, Jane Grey Browning (Mitch) of Lake Waccamaw and Joan Baldwin Nicot (Henri) of Paris, France; his half-sister, Jessica Baldwin, of Wilmington; his brother; James “Jim” Clayton Baldwin III (Rebecca) of Raleigh; his niece, Blair Baldwin (Tom Anderson), and three nephews, John Camille Nicot, Aurelien James Nicot and James Clayton Baldwin IV.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10:00-10:45 am prior to the service, at McKenzie Mortuary, 112 Jefferson St., Whiteville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Peace Fellowship Church, 7279 Red Hill Road, Whiteville, N.C. 28472.
