February 8, 1937 ~ February 27, 2024 (age 87)
Shelby King Sellers 87, entered her eternal home on February 27, 2024. She was a patient at the Angel House Hospice Center in Whiteville, N.C.
Shelby was born in Brunswick County to Elroy and Ada S. King on February 8, 1937. She was the granddaughter of Thomas and Mantha Jane Smith, who she thought of as ” Mama and Daddy.”
Shelby grew up in Whiteville with her maternal grandparents. She attended Whiteville City Schools and continued her education at Southeastern Community College, university of N.C. at Wilmington and Pembroke University with a degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in “Special Education.” She retired from Whiteville City Schools after thirty years of service.
She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church for a number of years where she served on committees and supported the Joy Class of her church.
She enjoyed the “nature” that God created for us; she liked to re-do houses, paint and decorate them. She was an avid seamstress who liked to make items like blankets, aprons, pillows etc. and share with others. She made and provided Edgewood school’s flag that flies in front of the school. She was part of the group that was instrumental in developing “group homes” in our area for special needs persons to live with supervision. She always had to have a “project” going! Her greatest accomplishment was being the mother of her “Special Needs” son, Ronnie, who has been the joy of her life.
Shelby was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents, her hustbands, Sam M. Sellers and Rodney C. Thompson; her brothers Charles R. King, Ralph C. King, Lyle Ray King and Elon King, a sister Nelva F. King and cousin Judy V. Smith.
She is survived by her son Ronald “Ronnie” Thompson, a stepdaughter, Sandy Evancho (Mark), a stepson, Eric Sellers (Julie), a sister Hilda K. Ray and a cousin Joyce S. Clark and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Peacock Funeral Home on Thursday, February 29th 2024 at 2:00pm followed by a graveside service at Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park at 3:00pm with the Pastor Barry Swain officiating.
