The sheriff’s office will pay a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect in the death of Antonio Jamal Maultsby Jr.
Young Antonio would have turned eight years old next week. He was shot to death just before 9 p.m. Saturday at a home on Braswell Road near Chadbourn. The child was struck twice in the chest, and pronounced dead at Columbus Regional.
Sheriff Bill Rogers said in a press release that further details in the killing are not being released, due to the ongoing investigation.
Rogers said Sunday that investigators from the CCSO, Chadbourn Police and State Bureau of Investigation worked through the night developing information.
“Our team has been working tirelessly on this case,” he said in today’s press release, “and we will continue to pursue every lead until we find answers and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.”
The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office announced a $1,000 reward today (Wednesday) for anyone who can provide “relevant and helpful information” leading to the arrest of the shooter. Chadbourn businessman Ricky Soles announced Monday that he will pay a $500 reward that results in an arrest.
“The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office extends its gratitude to the community for their cooperation and support during this difficult time,” the press release said.
Wednesday’s announcement marked the first time the sheriff’s office released the name of the child.
“Our hearts ache for the family and loved ones of Antonio,” Rogers said. “This is an unimaginable tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time.”
