The final suspect has been sentenced for his part in the October 2018 killing of Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Conner.
Raheem Davis, 27, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact and probation violation in Columbus County Superior Court today (April 4). He was sentenced to a total of 6.65 to 11 years in prison, with 5.5 years credit for time served.
On Oct. 16, 2018, Davis was behind the wheel of a stolen pickup driving a high rate of speed when Conner executed a traffic stop on the truck south of Whiteville. When Conner approached the vehicle, Chauncey Askew opened fire, mortally wounding the trooper. Askew was in the passenger seat of the truck. Davis allegedly took the pickup from his employer the afternoon before the killing, and it had not yet been reported stolen.
Davis dropped Askew at an unknown location and fled to Fair Bluff, where he was captured by Fair Bluff Police, the Highway Patrol and sheriff’s deputies after getting the truck stuck on the railroad tracks. Davis was charged with murder, but that charge was dropped when Askew was arrested on the murder charge by U.S. Marshals.
Askew pleaded guilty earlier this year to two murders – Conner and Jerome Parrott — just as his capital trial was about to begin in Brunswick County. Davis as scheduled to testify in the Conner trial.
Davis’ address on court documents was 2089 Braswell Road – where seven-year- old Antonio Maultsby Jr. was shot to death March 16. That case is still under investigation. Davis has been in custody since 2018.
