More than 20 catalytic converters have been stolen from the Border Belt Research Station in since June.

The sheriff’s office is searching for a suspect vehicle in the case. The red full-size SUV, possibly a Ford, was caught on surveillance cameras at the facility.

Investigators have not been able to obtain information about the suspect.

Catalytic converters are targeted by thieves because they are easily removed, and contain precious metals. Even used catalytic converters can be resold for hundreds of dollars to parts yards. Theft of a converter is a felony in North Carolina.

Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to call 910.642.6551. You can also submit a tip via the sheriff’s office app. You can remain anonymous.
