Due to flooding and high water, N.C. Forest Service officials have implemented a trail detour and closures at Turnbull Creek Educational State Forest (Elizabethtown).

A detour is in place for Duncan Trail flanking Turnbull Creek. Visitors should follow the detour signs that are in place.

The Mountains to Sea Trail segment remains open, but due to muddy and wet conditions, hikers are advised to use extreme caution.

Turnbull Creek Trail and a portion of the Smith Swamp Trail, from the Jones Lake drain south to the back gate, are closed.

Forest officials will assess water levels and will advise when trails are reopened. The threat of flooding remains possible for the area through the week. A flood warning for low-lying areas in and around Elizabethtown remains in effect at least through Friday night.

All forest exhibits remain open.
