Troopers Investigate Two Fatals in One Hour Sunday

The Highway Patrol is seeking any information about a hit and run early Saturday that resulted in a fatality in Fair Bluff.

Troopers were called to the scene of that incident a short time before a head-on collision killed one man and seriously injured a woman in North Whiteville. The wrecks were unrelated.

Sgt. K. McVicker of the Highway Patrol said Jarell McMillian, 36, of Fair Bluff was struck and killed in the roadway near the intersection of Academy and Elm in Fair Bluff. Troopers were called at 3:15 a.m. The sheriff’s office was providing backup for Fair Bluff Police, who were investigating a reported stabbing at a large party, when the man was killed.

At 3:48 a.m., McVicker said, troopers were called to a head-on collision on U.S. 701 at  Old Lumberton.

John Benson, 61, of Whiteville was killed when his 2006 Toyota automobile went “completely in the opposite lane” and he ran into a 2022 Honda van.

The female driver of the van was the only occupant. She was taken to Columbus Regional then airlifted to Novant New Hanover. No charges will be filed in that crash, McVicker said.

Troopers hope someone will provide information about the hit and run, she said. A vehicle that was involved in a crash near Fair Bluff was thought to have been involved, she said, but troopers found no evidence linking the car to the fatality.

“If anyone saw anything, or has security camera footage from that area, we’d like to know about it,” she said.
