As we gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone that our offices will be closing early today at 3pm and closed on Thursday and Friday in observance of the holiday. Regular operations will resume on Monday, Dec. 2.
The holiday season is a time for joy and togetherness, but it also brings increased activity at shopping centers and online marketplaces. To help ensure a safe and happy holiday, Sheriff Bill Rogers shares these essential safety tips for in-person and online shopping:
Shopping Safety Tips
• Keep belongings secure: Keep your purse or wallet close to your body and avoid placing your phone in your back pocket.
• Stay calm: If an item is unavailable, never argue or fight over it.
• Be aware: Always know your surroundings and locate exits upon entering a store.
• Share your plans: Let someone know your shopping destination and expected return time.
• Secure purchases: Avoid leaving shopping bags visible in your car—store them in the trunk or take them home immediately.
• Protect your information: Only present your credit or debit card when prompted by the cashier, and shield your PIN from view.
• Report concerns: Notify store staff or law enforcement if you see suspicious behavior.
Online Shopping Tips
• Shop securely: Use trusted websites with “HTTPS” or a padlock icon in the URL.
• Monitor transactions: Keep track of online purchases and check your bank statements for unauthorized activity.
• Avoid public Wi-Fi: Use secure networks, such as your home internet, when entering personal information.
• Verify retailers: Research unfamiliar sellers to confirm their legitimacy before making purchases.
“While the holidays are a time to celebrate, they are also a time to stay vigilant,” said Rogers. “By following these tips, you can protect yourself and your loved ones while keeping the season cheerful and safe.”
From all of us at the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, we wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving and holiday season.
