It is the Christmas season in Columbus County, and if you can’t get a little bit of cheer, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.
The Lake Waccamaw Christmas parade is today at 10 a.m. They had a great crowd at the Lake last night for the community Christmas tree lighting. Remember the self-guided Nativity Journal is today, with 1,000 nativity sets from around the world. Start at the boys and girls’ home, and moving to Little Wheel of Hope Missionary Baptist Church, the Anchorage and Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church. There’s live music today at the boys and girls home chapel as well. Admission is free but donations are appreciated.
Whiteville’s Christmas extravaganza is this evening starting at 6 p.m. downtown with the parade. There will be a whole fleet of food trucks, free carriage rides, the kids’ zone, and music. Santa Claus will be lighting the community Christmas tree as always.
Today is breakfast with Santa at the Chadbourn Depot starting at 9 a.m. There will be all kinds of fun as well as a full breakfast and visits with the Man of the Hour. Cost is $5. The breakfast is at nine, but the fun goes on all morning. Sunday is Chadbourn’s Christmas parade at 3 p.m.
Bolton’s Parade and festival is tomorrow starting at 5 p.m.

We are all excited about Christmas, but let’s face it, times have been harder on some folks. There are several toy drives going on right now. NCWORKS is sponsoring a drive through the community college. Call 910.788.6261. The 21st Annual Veterans Toy Run is TODAY starting at 9 a.m. in the Whiteville Walmart parking lot. Kickstands go up at 1015 a.m.
Cerro Gordo Baptist Church has its annual chili and soup cookoff Sunday. Contestants should be at the church by 4 p.m., and doors open at 5 p.m. Entry fee is $5. Admission for taste testers is $5 which gets you three tokens, or $20 for unlimited tasting and ten tokens. Call 910.619.2136 for more information. CGBC is located at 257 Church Street Cerro Gordo.
We have a growing list of church Christmas programs at CCN. Here are a few:
- New Life Community Church will present the Christmas play “One Day Coming Soon” Sunday at 6 p.m. The church is located at 107 Maultsby St., Whiteville.
- Happy Home Baptist Church will dedicate the J.D. Gore Memorial Church Library in a special service Sunday at 11 a.m. The church is located at 2670 Happy Home Rd., Nakina.
- Transformation Church has several events during December.
The Oxendines will sing Sunday at 10 a.m.
The church sponsors a turkey shoot every Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. with all proceeds going to the church building fund.
The shoot is held at 9955 James B. White Hwy. South (U.S. 701South). Transformation and Milk B4 Meat Ministries will also host Christmas caroling Dec. 22 at 6 p.m.
Transformation also has service every Wednesday at 7, followed by a covered dish supper, in the Lebanon Church fellowship hall at 9237 James B. White Hwy. South (U.S. 701).
The church meets in the Lebanon fellowship hall for worship every Sunday at 10 a.m. Call 910.234.8089 for more information.
- Tabor City Baptist Church will host a free breakfast with Santa Saturday from 9-11 a.m. Kids can also get their pictures taken with Santa Claus for free. The church is located at 200 Live Oak St., Tabor City. Call 910.653.2029 or email tcbc@tcbaptist.netto make a reservation.
- Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church has several events scheduled for the season. A Blue Christmas service will be held at noon Dec. 10 (Tuesday). The church Christmas musical and party is Dec. 15 starting at 4 p.m. A Christmas Eve service is set for 7 p.m. Dec. 24. The church has worship services every Sunday at 9 and 11 a.m. LWMC is located at 508 Lakeshore Dr., Lake Waccamaw.
