A convicted felon caught with a handgun will be sentenced in March.

Bobby Jaquane Toon, 31, was arrested in January 2024 after fleeing from law enforcement. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, and placed under $15,000 secured bond.

The sheriff’s office said in a press release that on Jan. 29, 2024, deputies were finishing up a traffic stop when they saw another vehicle driving erratically nearby. The driver slowed down, then sped up, pulled into a parking lot, then sped off in the opposite direction, the release said.

Deputies followed the fleeing vehicle onto Baldwin’s Circle, where they found the car parked in the street. Toon was spotted prone alongside a ditch about 15 feet away. A handgun was less than three feet from him, the report said.

Toon was ordered not to move, and was detained. Deputies knew Toon and were aware that he had a previous felony record. He was initially charged at the state level with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The case was handed over to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) Violent Crimes Task Force, which includes a Columbus County deputy. In September, a federal grand jury indicted Toon on the same charge. He pleaded guilty Dec. 17, and will be sentenced in March.

Toon was also part of a conspiracy to smuggle drugs and telephones into the Columbus County Detention Center in November. The investigation, dubbed Operation Dropped Call, led to  nine arrests. Toon was transferred to Maury Correctional after that incident.
