Governor Josh Stein was sworn into office Wednesday, replacing Roy Cooper in the state’s top slot. Stein promised continued help for Hurricane victims, better teacher pay improvements to schools and protection of personal rights.

Jeff Jackson was also sworn in as attorney general. A public inauguration for the new governor and all the council of state is next week.

 

A Confederate Flag was raised on the Southern gateway into Whiteville sometime over New Year’s Eve night. Emergency Services Director Hal Lowder said police removed the flag, which was raised without the city’s knowledge or permission. Whoever hoisted the flag apparently stole the city flag from one of the three poles at the gateway. The trespassing and theft is under investigation.

 

Highway Patrol Master Trooper Anthony Godwin, age 35, died of an apparent heart attack while on a hunting trip Tuesday. Godwin was a Columbus County native. He was assigned to Columbus and Brunswick Counties. Arrangements are being handled by Meares Funeral Home.
