Deputies and Chadbourn Police arrested a mother and son early Wednesday after the pair allegedly ran a family-based drug enterprise.
The months-long investigation, which involved the sheriff’s office Special Operations Division and Chadbourn Police, came about due to complaints from citizens about suspected drug activity. Sheriff Bill Rogers and Chadbourn Police Chief Ken Elliot coordinated the investigation and raid.
Loretta Brunson, 60, and Gary Fernell Robinson Jr., 23, were allegedly running a drug sales operation out of their home at 202 Jackson Street in Chadbourn.
Investigators began working the case in October, Sheriff Bill Rogers said in a press release. Two firearms, a significant quantity of narcotics, and cash tied to drug sales were seized.
Robinson was charged with trafficking in opiates, possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and prescriptions, and drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $75,000.
Brunson was already out on bond in an unrelated case, so she was held without bail. She was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver narcotics and maintaining a dwelling for drug activities. She was arrested in August on charges of possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver cocaine and trafficking heroin, and maintaining a dwelling for drug activities. She was released on a $15,000 secured bond.
“Working closely with departments across Columbus County is essential to our mission of protecting the community from those who spread harm through the distribution of illegal substances,” said Sheriff Bill Rogers. “This operation is a testament to the power of collaboration in removing dangerous individuals from our streets.
“We thank the Chadbourn Police Department for their invaluable partnership in this successful operation. This joint effort demonstrates our dedication to removing illegal drugs and firearms from our communities.”
