Snow Has Stopped Falling, Dangerous Black Ice is the Concern

ColCo Jan. 2025 (CCN Christopher Cawley)

From six to as much as nine inches of snow hit Columbus County Tuesday and Wednesday. It was the largest snowfall since 2018.

The snow has stopped falling, but the ice is causing headaches across the county. Officials are warning drivers against any unnecessary travel. While DOT trucks are scraping main routes, many secondary roads will remain impassable until temperatures rise tomorrow.

Anything that melts today will refreeze tonight, causing dangerous black ice. If at all possible, stay off the roads until tomorrow morning. If you must drive, slow down, increase your following distance and avoid sudden stops. Temperatures continue to be dangerously cold, and will stay that way tonight into Friday morning. Highs in the 40s Friday will speed up some of the melting.
