Baby it is cold outside, but there’s plenty to do in our community. From good causes to good food and good fun, things are not slowing down despite the frigid weather.

The warming station is open from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. nightly at Facts of Life Church, 506 N. Lee Street, Whiteville. Pastor Daisy Brooks said hours have been extended due to the extreme cold, and volunteers are desperately needed from area churches and civic groups. Call 910.918.4531.

The Southeastern Genealogical Society will meet Jan. 11 at Whiteville Missionary Alliance Church. The speaker will be Henry Mintz. He will discuss Columbus County in the 19th century. The meeting starts at 2 p.m., but members often arrive early to share family history. Everyone is welcome.

A fundraiser plate sale for the family and children of Misty Cribb will be held January 25 from 11 until 2 p.m. at Murf’s Pawn in Whiteville and Happy Home Baptist Church in Nakina. Tickets are $10. The sheriff’s office is collecting camp stove size LP bottles for shipment to western North Carolina. The deadline is Sunday. Drop off donations at the sheriff’s office on Washington Street in Whiteville.

Milk B4 Meat Ministries is sponsoring a coat drive for children in the schools. Approximately 20 children in need have been identified. Contact Jon Walton via Facebook for more information.

The Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum is now on its winter hours. Beginning Dec. 28, the museum will be open Saturdays 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. until Feb. 22. The museum is on Flemington Drive at Lake Waccamaw. Admission is free.

The Forest Service, Wildlife Commission and the Nature Conservancy are gearing up for controlled burn season, which runs January through August. People who live in and near pine forests can expect to see smoke conduct controlled burns to restore area forests.

If you’d like to learn how to manage controlled burns, the Forest Service is offering two state certified prescribed burner classes this year. The class is $25, and will include classroom, virtual learning and field work. Classes are set for May 19-22 and Oct. 20-23. For more information, go to ncforestservice.gov.

Handyman Hal will be at Engage Life Church this Sunday at 10 a.m. for a Kids’ Appreciation Service. There will be prize drawings for all children who attend. Engage Life is located at 386 Thompson Town Rd., Whiteville.

Happy Home Baptist Church and Transformation Church  will host an ordination service for Jon Walton Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. The service will be at Happy Home, 2670 Happy Home Road, Nakina.

Western Prong Baptist Church will hold a meeting Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. at the church for anyone interested in volunteering for the  upcoming Tim Tebow Night To Shine . Western Prong is located between Whiteville and Clarkton, at 167 Peacock Rd., Whiteville.

Speaking of Western Prong, their annual wild game banquet is Jan. 21. Tickets are $20. There will be drawings, speakers and much more. Major League Baseball players Mackenzie Gore, Gavin Williams and Brooks Baldwin will also make special appearances at the banquet. Call 910.648.2744 for ticket information.

Tickets are also still available for non profit night at the Fayetteville Marksmen hockey game Jan. 11. The Marksmen will take on the Knoxville Ice Bears. A portion of all ticket sales go to the Veterans Memorial Park. Call 910.840.5207 for information.
