The suspect in a New Hanover County murder was apprehended by Columbus County deputies in Whiteville.
Marvin Lorenzo Newkirk, 40, of Wilmington, was wanted first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, armed robbery, and felony conspiracy. He was arrested without incident, booked and turned over to New Hanover County.
The New Hanover Sheriff’s Office said Newkirk and two teens shot and killed Nathaniel Turner in his Wilmington apartment Feb. 9. A female victim was also shot multiple times, but survived. Newkirk’s alleged co-defendants are Jamail Tramble, 18, and a juvenile, 16.
Court records show Newkirk was previously convicted of second degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in 2008.
“While conducting investigative duties in the Whiteville community, detectives observed a man matching the description of a wanted individual entering a local convenience store,” a press release from the sheriff’s office read.
“This arrest is a testament to the dedication and vigilance of our detectives and deputies in keeping Columbus County safe, Sheriff Bill Rogers said. “Our partnership with surrounding law enforcement agencies is critical in ensuring that dangerous individuals are brought to justice. We appreciate the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office for their collaboration in this case.”
