Two people living in a storage building were airlifted to a burn center after the shed caught fire early Tuesday.
Hallsboro Fire Chief Joe Tyler said firefighters were called out at 2:20 a.m. to 155 Bussy Road. Hallsboro was joined by Old Dock, White Marsh and Lake Waccamaw.
Tyler said the cause of the fire has not been determined. Firefighters were on the scene within minutes of the 911 call. The address is a few hundred feet from Hallsboro Volunteer Fire Department.
“The building was completely engulfed when we arrived,” he said.
A witness said she and her husband were awakened by “an exploding sound” and called 911. The home was burning when they stepped outside to see if the residents of the shed needed help. She said there “multiple explosions” while crew worked to knock down the fire.
The names of the people in the shed were not immediately available, but they had been living in the storage building for some time, the neighbor said. Both sustained third degree burns.
