Strong onshore winds saved Columbus County from most of Sunday’s weather impacts. The entire area saw some strong winds and spotty rain, but nothing like the severe weather from Missouri to Western North Carolina. Multiple fatalities were reported after tornadoes tore through the Midwest, but the system lost most of its punch before arrival today.
Southern Farm Days saw huge crowds Saturday at the Boys and Girls Home of Lake Waccamaw. Sunday’s schedule was canceled due to the potential for severe weather.
Despite that welcome rain today, the Forest Service is issuing warnings against outdoor burning in much of North Carolina. The combination of low humidity and the continuing drought are creating dangerous wildfire conditions. Columbus County is still roughly seven inches below average rainfall.
