Accompanied by 200 motorcycles, the Wall that Heals made its way through Whiteville Tuesday headed for the Veterans Memorial Park of America. The Wall That Heals will be open 24 hours a day Thursday through Sunday. Events for the visit include a welcome home ceremony at 6:00 p.m. Thursday; Agent Orange Awareness ceremony Friday at 7:30 p.m., and a closing ceremony Sunday at 1:45 p.m.
Columbus County Commissioners approved a controversial new percentage based tax collection fee Monday night. Whiteville City Manager Darren Currie was not allowed to finish making a statement to county commissioners on the proposal. Currie and leaders from several area municipalities were there to address the county board.
State Health Officials said Tuesday that monkeypox has been found in wastewater in two locations in Greenville. The two cases are half of the total number of Mpox Type I cases found in the United States. Mpox Type I is responsible for the outbreak in Central Africa.
Breaking News: Ken Elliot announced Tuesday that he will run for Columbus County Sheriff in next spring’s elections. We’ll have more on Elliot and the sheriff’s race Wednesday in ColumbusCountyNews.com. Elliot is currently police chief for the town of Chadbourn. He is the fourth announced candidate in the race.
