A protest planned for today at Williams Township School was cancelled after organizers went to investigate a weekend shooting in Myrtle Beach. Civil rights organizer John Barnett’s THUG organization is protesting that a WTS substitute teacher has been exonerated of accusations of racism.
Three police officers are on paid leave after an alleged teen gunmen was firing a weapon during an altercation on N. Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach, just before midnight. Eleven people were hurt in the incident.
The jury summons scam is making the rounds again. One local man was almost scammed out of $4,500 when someone claiming to be with the sheriff’s office called from a local number saying the victim had missed jury duty. He was instructed to deposit money into an ATM to pay bond on the bogus charge.
Much of Columbus County is now considered to be in a severe drought. The new state drought monitor Thursday showed the county teetering on extreme drought designation. No burn bans have been issued for the area, but fire conditions are worsening for the entire state. No significant widespread rain is expected for more than a week.
