Woman Killed in Monday Crash

A Gaston Sellers Road woman died Monday when her vehicle was struck by an SUV that failed to slow down for a stop sign.
Betty Nance Stevens, 74, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to First Sgt. A. Pait of the Highway Patrol.
The report by Trooper C. Hernandez said Stevens was waiting for traffic so she could make a left turn onto Gaston Sellers Road from U.S. 701 when her southbound Chevrolet Equinox was rear ended by a Jeep Cherokee driven by Shavonna Shameice Vereen of Pine Circle Drive.
The impact sent both vehicles off the right of the road, back across the centerline and off the left shoulder. The Chevrolet stopped just inside the woodline, and the Jeep nearby.

Stevens was killed on impact. Her daughter, Lisa Stevens, 41, also of Gaston Sellers Road, sustained minor injuries, as did Vereen. Neither woman sought medical attention.
Vereen was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
Shortly before Monday’scrash, Lisa Stevens was allegedly assaulted by her brother, Byron Scott Stevens.

The sheriff’s office reported that deputies were called to 1187 Gaston Sellers Road at 6:20 p.m. Byron Stevens had allegedly cut Lisa Stevens with a knife, then left the residence. Deputies found Byron Stevens walking down the side of the road in front of the property, according to the report.

Deputies did not find the knife used in the alleged attack, but they did find a bottle containing Adderall, Suboxone and what Stevens said was THC wax.

Ms. Stevens sustained a laceration on one arm, and was transported to Columbus Regional, where she was treated and released.

Byron Stevens was held under no bond on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of narcotics and possession of synthetic cannabinoids.

The county has had four motor vehicle fatalities this year. The last occurred March 17, when a Lumberton woman died on Silver Spoon Road. Patrick Pendleton of Bladenboro was charged with felony death by vehicle and multiple drug offenses in that crash.
