Brunswick Child Molester Gets 104 to 147 Years in Prison

Justin Burney was found guilty in a Brunswick County courtroom today of multiple charges of statutory sex offense and indecent liberties with a minor, and sentenced to at least 104 years in prison.
Burney’s trial lasted nine days, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Superior court Judge Jason Disbrow sentenced Burney to four consecutive terms of 300 to 420 months, followed by three consecutive terms of 16-29 months in prison, for a total of 1,248 to 1,767 months behind bars.
The Brunswick Sheriff’s Office began investigating Burney in 2023 after a telephone conversation, according to the press release. Three children were identified as victims. The children were forensically interviewed by the Carousel Center of Brunswick County.
The case was prosecuted by Asst. District Attorney Michele Morton and Legal Assistant Donna Kutchma. Det. Laura sellers of the Brunswick Sheriff’s Office was lead investigator.
“Children are among the most vulnerable in our community. It is imperative that we vigorously prosecute those that choose to harm them,” District Attorney join David said in a press release. “We hope this verdict and sentence sheds a light on the children’s incredible bravery in reporting the abuse and testifying in court. We hope it also sends a message that our office stands committed to working with our partners to seek significant active sentences against child sexual predators not only to seek justice but to protect our community.”
