Drought monitor showed conditions improving in Columbus County, but overall the entire area is still considered in a moderate drought. Columbus County is around four inches below average rainfall right now. Fire danger is increasing, but the showers moving in this week may provide badly needed relief. Some farmers are already concerned that this year may be the second poor planting season in a row for Columbus County.
Friday is the dedication for the Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker and the Memorial Park dedication at the courthouse in Whiteville. The ceremony is set for 10:00 a.m. The Blue Star markers are placed by garden clubs across the country to honor the military. The Memorial Garden is the new home from several of Columbus County military monuments displaced by the courthouse renovation.
May 31 is the Columbus County Disaster Preparedness Expo at the fairgrounds. Multiple agencies and organizations will be on hand to provide information about assistance before, during and after hurricanes and other natural disasters. The free event is from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
