A Bolton man is being held under no bond after allegedly killing another man in Sandyfield Tuesday.
Quashaun Freeman, 28, was taken into custody in a Raleigh apartment complex Thursday, Sheriff Bill Rogers said in a video statement posted to social media. Freeman was armed at the time of his arrest.
Freeman is alleged to have shot and killed Jonathan Baldwin, 31, during an altercation at a Sandyfield home Tuesday evening. Deputies were called to 664 Browntown Road just after 7 p.m. Baldwin and Freeman reportedly argued and began fighting, at which point Freeman allegedly shot Baldwin and fled.
Baldwin was transported to Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire and Rescue by private vehicle, then taken by ambulance to an area hospital. Rogers said Baldwin died en route.
Deputies and agents from the State Bureau of Investigation worked through the night under tents securing the scene as heavy rains moved through the area.
“Our Criminal Investigative Division immediately began working around the clock to identify and apprehend the individual responsible for this senseless act of violence,” Rogers said. “Their unwavering commitment and swift action allowed us to solve this cold-blooded murder in less than 48 hours.”
Rogers thanked the SBI, Raleigh Police and Wake County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the case.
“Their efforts were essential in bringing the suspect into custody without further incident,” Rogers said.
Freeman is scheduled for a first appearance this afternoon (Friday).
Rogers said he had spoken “personally” with Baldwin’s family.
“I want to take this opportunity to personally extend my deepest condolences to Mr. Baldwin’s extended family and loved ones. We know this is a time of overwhelming grief.”
The investigation is continuing, and additional charges are pending, Rogers said. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office. You may also submit an anonymous tip via the sheriff’s office app.
The murder was the fourth in Columbus County this year.
