Around 200 people showed up for Tuesday’s meeting about a planned development near Lake Waccamaw. More than 4,500 homes would be built on a 1,000 acre tract between Buckhead and Lake Waccamaw. No speakers expressed support for the project, instead questioning the developments firm’s plans for dealing with stormwater runoff and environmental impacts, among other concerns.

Lake Waccamaw Town Commissioners approved the first tax increase in more than 20 years at Tuesday’s meeting. The new rate is thirty cent per one hundred dollar evaluation. The critical need to continue to provide citizens with fire, EMS, and police services prompted the necessity for the extra funds.

Frank Perrette will be honored this Friday with a ceremony and a bridge dedicated in his name. Perritte was killed in pursuit of a felony suspect in Cumberland County in 2005 while he was a DMV Enforcement Officer. Perrette also served with the Tabor City Police and Sheriff’s Office. The Beaverdam Bridge on N.C. 410 will be named in his memory.
