An alligator was “neutralized” after allegedly injuring a child at Lake Waccamaw today. Lake Waccamaw Police reported via social media that the child was seriously injured, but the wounds were not life threatening.
Multiple children were playing in about four feet of water when the victim “exclaimed’ something bit me,’ the LWPD said. The children were rushed from the water, and an alligator around six to seven feet long surfaced in the area.
“It is also unclear as to if the injuries were caused by a bite, or a claw,” the post said, “but they were definitely caused by the alligator.
“The alligator responsible for this incident has been neutralized.”
It is the first documented injury from an alligator at the lake in decades. The population has increased in recent years, but the animals have always been residents of the lake and canal.
“We remind our residents and visitors to remain ever vigilant and aware of their surroundings,” LWPD said. “In this particular case, the gator was never seen till after the incident, and multiple adults were present. Please respect the water and understand these animals are not tame or pets. If you see one, maintain a safe distance at all times. And exit the water if you are in it.”
The Wildlife Resources Commission is investigating.
