A controversial piece of legislation led to an arrest after alleged death threats against State Sen. Bill Rabon.
Antony Wayne Street, 44, of Supply, was initially held under $2,000 secured bond. That bond was raised to $25,000 Monday, according to court documents. He was charged with threatening an elected official, which is a felony.
On June 18, warrants show Street allegedly made a social media post that said Rabon and approximately 40 other legislators deserved to “lose your lives.” The warrant said the Facebook post said “all senators in Raleigh need to understand what happened to Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman in Minnesota can happen here in North Carolina.”
Street was referring to two Minnesota state legislators who were shot in their homes.
The Brunswick Sheriff’s Office contacted the State Bureau of Investigation after being made aware of the threats, and the SBI immediately began work on the case. Street was arrested without incident Friday afternoon.
Street was critical of proposed legislation that will ban inshore and offshore shrimping out to one half-mile, a move that was made to help reopen the flounder and red drum recreational fishing seasons. Outcry over the measure prompted the state senate to introduce a bill to help compensate inshore shrimp trawlers for their losses during the flounder/drum season.
The amended bill banning inshore shrimping and the companion payment bill are expected to be passed by the legislature.
Street has a criminal history stretching back several years, including charges of simple assault, harvesting oysters without tags, and operating a boat at night without proper lights.
