There is no room left at the Columbus County Animal Shelter.
On Monday alone, 50 new animals came in, including some strays and others turned over by their owners.
The Animal Protective Services Facebook page on Tuesday asked for help from the community.
“We are overwhelmed,” the post read. “We are exhausted. We are heartbroken. And most of all – we are scared.
“We are scared for the ones still out there with no safe place to go. Scared for the ones here who are still waiting for someone to choose them.”
The shelter has halted all intakes until some kennel space can be cleared. Only true emergency intakes will be accepted until further notice.
The shelter currently has an unusually large number of found dogs and puppies awaiting return to their owners. Anyone missing a dog is encouraged to contact the shelter, view their Facebook page or go by the shelter between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
