Deputies, Whiteville Rescue and Animal Protective Services worked together to save a puppy that allegedly overdosed with his owner Friday.

The sheriff’s office reported that deputies were called to 8 Bryson Drive around 7:30 p.m. for a possible overdose. They found a 50-year-old male and a puppy unconscious inside the home.

“Without hesitation, deputies began administering emergency medical aid to both the male and the puppy,” she sheriff’s office said in a press release. Both man and dog were given Narcan, which reverses the effects of opioid overdoses.

Whiteville Rescue provided additional care and transported both the man and the canine to Columbus Regional.

“The puppy was evaluated by our Columbus County Animal Protective Services Officers and then safely transported to the shelter,” the release said, “where it is now resting comfortably and receiving lots of love and care.”

Sheriff Bill Rogers thanked Whiteville Rescue for their dedication, not just to human lives, but to “our four-legged friends, too.

“He may be small, but tonight this brave little pup had a whole team of heroes looking out for him,” Rogers said. “He left the hospital with more than just a second chance-he gained a few best friends in the process.

“That’s what this job is really about protecting the vulnerable, no matter how small they are.”

The puppy is expected to make a full recovery. Charges are pending in the case.
