Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there from Columbus County News. Gas up that car, and get your walking shoes on because you’re going to be traveling this Father’s Day weekend in Columbus. The farmers market, H.E.A.R.T.S, and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences will have events going on, and a big celebration for Dad is planned at the rec center in Whiteville. If you don’t feel like getting out after the long work week, consider donating to some local organizations in the area. They will surely thank you for it.

Families First, the local domestic violence shelter, is asking for donations of cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products. Items needed include all purpose cleaners, shampoo and conditioner, toilet paper and paper towels, toothbrushes and toothpaste, body wash, deodorant, dish soap, laundry detergent, disinfecting wipes, and other basic household and hygiene essentials. Donations call be dropped off at the advocacy offices located at 121 West Main Street in Whiteville or 105 West Board Street in Elizabethtown. The Columbus County Beekeepers will be having their monthly meeting on June 12 at 7 p.m. Barry Chadwick will be speaking about summer dearth at the NC Cooperative Extension that evening. The extension can be found at 45 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.

Baldwin Woods OBGYN’s Dr. Sam Wheatley celebrated a huge milestone last week. Wheatley reached his 50th year of practicing medicine and impacting lives. Columbus Regional Healthcare thanked him for his dedication to delivering babies and for all he has done to serve his community. Congratulations Dr. Wheatley.

The ‘Fatherless Roads’ book launch will be held on Friday, June 13, from 5-9 p.m. at the Vineland Station Depot in Whiteville. The book was written by Brad Wilder to inspire, educate, and uplift individuals and families impacted by father absence. Wilder is a motivational speaker, author, police officer, and community leader in Whiteville. This is the fourth book in his Wildly Inspirational series. The Columbus County Farmers Market will be hosting two events this Saturday, June 14. From 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., Old Fashion Farm Day will be going on with a peek at how planting and farming happened way back when. Antique equipment, vendors, music, food and games will be there for the public to enjoy, and NYT Farm will be in attendance with microgreens and freeze dried products.

The ‘Hoedown at Sundown’ event will also take place from 6-9 p.m. at the market location. The evening will include music, dancing, food and food trucks, games, a photo booth and more. The cost is $15 for couples, $10 for adults, and $5 for children 10 years old and under.  The CCFM can be found 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville and is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

H.E.A.R.T.S will be hosting an event at the park located at 116 Miller Street in Chadbourn on Saturday, June 14. Their first Community Fun Fest will include a rock wall, mechanical bull, inflatable obstacle course, a foam pit, dunk tank, games, bouncy houses, food, and more. Fun Fest will run from 1-5 p.m., and admission is only $1.

The Columbus Baptist Association is collecting heavy winter coats, scarves, and gloves for homeless shelters and those in need in New York City. The items can be gently used with no tears, stains, rips, and working zippers, and sizes can include both children and adults. In each pocket, the CBA will place a Bible keychain to help the recipient have the word of God. The items can be dropped Monday-Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the office located at 208 South Thompson Street in Whiteville. If you have a large number of donations, a pickup can be arranged by call 910.642.2155.

Come to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville on June 14 from 2-3 p.m. to hear the story of the North Atlantic Right whale affectionately known as “Stumpy” by the scientists who followed her for 30 years. Learn about the journey of this now legendary animal came to the museum in Raleigh, where her story educates visitors about whale diversity and the obstacles that these critically endangered whales face. Lisa Gatens, NCMNS Mammalogy Collections Manager, will address the threats and laws related to this species as well as conservation techniques being implemented to reverse population decline. The NCMNSW is located at 415 South Madison Street in Whiteville.  

If you feel like making a road trip this weekend, Bladen County Water Rescue will host their second annual ‘Summer Vendor Festival’ on June 14. The day will include yard sellers, food trucks, artisans, flea marketers, and other folks peddling their wares. The event will be held from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at 7061 US Highway 701 North across from the Scotchman at White Lake.

The first annual ‘Father’s in the Outfield’ celebration for dads will be held on Sunday, June 15, from 2-5 p.m. at Whiteville Parks and Recreation. There will be family games and water activities, vendors, free food and drinks, cars, motorcycles, hotrods, slingshots, and a whole lot more. The event is a great way for family and friends to spend time together and make memories in the community. The center can be found at 155 Rec Center Drive.

The fifth annual Tabor City Youth Soring Sweet Potato Planting Day will a big hit last week. Each participant left with a container of planted sweet potato slips to plant at home. The NC Yam Festival queens, the Yam Man, and Farmerette Charity were all in attendance guiding the youngsters in their agriculture activity.

The Columbus County Department of Aging will have a ‘Shred-A-Thon’ fraud prevention day on Wednesday, June 25, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. The event is help protect community members and the elderly from identity fraud by shredding outdated private documents, preapproved credit card offers, old bills, old tax records and paystubs, employment records, and other documents that include personal information. The Whiteville Senior Center is located at 827 Washington Street.

The Veterans Memorial Park of America will have their second annual ‘Freedom Fest’ on Saturday, July 5, from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. at the park. Vendors, food trucks, yard sale participants, and kid-friendly activities are welcome. Setup for the the event will be on July 4 from 5-7 p.m. Those interested can call 910.640.8669 for more information. The park is located at 6354 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville.
