CBA Seeks Donations and Volunteers

The Columbus Baptist Association has a growing list of ministries planned for the fall, but they need help from the community to continue to do their good works. Food donations, volunteers, coats, and sponsors are just a few of the little things that go a long way, and those that give are biggest blessing the CBA can ask for.

‘Backpack Buddies’ Ministry Food Items List

The association will have their kick-off Backpack Buddy Packing Party on Monday, Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the CBA office. This year, funding for the Backpack Ministry has been drastically reduced, and the organization needs churches, local businesses, and civic groups to fill in the shortfall. If you would like to donate, you can send checks made payable to the CBA with “Backpack” written on the memo line to 208 South Thompson Street, Whiteville, NC 28472.

Item donation is also encouraged. Below is a list of foods needed for this year’s ministry:

  • Individual size pop-top cans (7.5oz) of ravioli, Vienna Sausages, Spaghetti-Os, Beefaroni, Beanie Weenies, etc.
  • Juice Boxes (not the pouches)
  • Pop Tarts
  • Granola Bars
  • Fruit Cups
  • Pudding Cups
  • Individual Cereal Boxes (little boxes not the little tubs)
  • Rice Krispy Treats
  • Raisins
  •  Square Nabs (crackers)
  •  Fruit Snacks

Collections can be brought to the CBA office Monday-Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  The ministry sends food home on Fridays to children in need who may not have a meal until they return to school again on Monday morning.

Volunteers Needed for Golf Tournament

The CBA is now looking for folks to help out with their fifteenth annual Toy Store Golf Tournament. The event will be on Saturday, Sept. 16, at Lake-O-Lakes Golf Course, and volunteers will be needed from 7:45 a.m. – 1 p.m. The organization will need help with registration and food distribution (plating lunches and manning the breakfast table). Those willing to volunteer their time for a good cause are asked to contact Reverend Dave Heller at 910.642.2155.

Coats for the City

Columbus County catches a chill in the middle of winter, but homeless shelters and other civic organizations in New York are trying to keep the deep freeze off of those who may be sleeping outside in the frosty weather. To help out with the endeavor, the CBA will be collecting new and gently used winter coats, scarves, gloves and hats for all ages. These items will be given to the the NC Baptists group for distribution in New York City. In each coat pocket, the CBA plans to place a Bible keychain to help the recipient know more about Jesus. The deadline for collections will be Nov. 1.

Winter gear guidelines are as follows:

  • All sizes for men, women, and children will be accepted
  • New and gently used heavy winter coats will be collected that can withstand NYC winter temperatures
  • Light weight jackets are welcome for layering
  • Items must not have holes, tears, or stains
  • Zippers should work and all buttons must be present
  • Winter scarves should also be new or gently used
  • Gloves can be any size and must be heavy enough to be able to withstand cold weather
  • Bible keychains are $2 each, and donations can be sent to the CBA office, or you can bring them with you when dropping off coats

Toy Store Child Sponsorship

Consider sponsoring a child or two this year during the holiday season with the help of the Columbus Baptist Association’s annual Toy Store. The charity is for parents and guardians who may not be able to provide Christmas for their children by allowing them to shop for toys for dimes on the dollar. Families are referred by other agencies, churches, and the pregnancy care center after the need for help has been verified.

The cost per child is $100 each, and the sponsorship helps to offset the cost of the toys. Donations can be made by visiting https://www.columbusbaptistnc.org/donate or you can mail a check to the CBA office. Make your check payable to the Columbus Baptist Association, and be sure to mark Toy Store Sponsor in the memo line.
